Think I might finally have a concept. It's based partly on an actual dream but will need much expansion. So....here's hoping it will all work out.

My concept kept not going anywhere interesting, so today I deleted most of it. Well, moved what I didn't want to a different doc just in case I change my mind. But anyways, I wanted to go a totally different direction while still using the concept so now I have to sit and think a bit before jumping into it. I know the ending still, but the beginning and middle are changing. I'm excited for the new direction. I adjusted the story concept just enough to be exciting to me. But I don't know the story points yet.

Getting into my concept. Several changes but it almost feels like working concept. A little research for my ending and I’ll see, but positive vibes from Odd Ball so far.

So um. I just was browsing Wikipedia for fun, and by chance I learned that there is a pretty well-known piece of fiction with a similar premise to what I've got. Like it's surprising what it has in common, because I thought that I connected this real dream I had with a pretty distinct concept. I don't know what to do. It was a cool idea, but I'm sure some people here are going to be familiar with this well-known story and feel like I stole from it. I don't know if it's worth scrapping it and coming up with something new.

Mmm, if the other story is that well known, maybe go with "This is intentional," in a "I'm honoring this piece in the literary canon with this new twist on the theme/idea." If there's a singular quote in that story that expresses the theme/idea/plot of your story, maybe show the intentionality by quoting it beneath the title? I dunno, I just think it's worth writing out your story even if it's similar to something else. Surely your personal experience/imagination will make it unique in special ways. If you enjoy the idea, then who cares? The critiques might call you out on it, but they might not. But it's just a critique, after all.

Okay, I've got one I'm happy with so add my name. Hey, what's the worst that can happen? {Devil me on my shoulder} "Hey, dude, go back and read your last contest entry."

Many stories share similarities, sometimes a lot of similarities. The themes and plot could be almost identical on paper, but when you read them they have distinct voices. But I do understand. I deleted two stories I started for the contest because they were SO similar to two stories in previous contests. So recent memory would be a problem. But the real reason I decided to start over was because the stories didn't excite me and they weren't going anywhere interesting. I can live with similarity but I cannot abide boring.

My idea is still different enough that it doesn't seem like a ripoff, but it does feel like it must have been written with that story in mind. Actually the theme is very different. I didn't even know this well-known story and still don't know much except from glancing quickly at the Wikipedia article— like, I'd heard of it and had a vague idea what it dealt with, but not that it had some of the plot points that I came up with.
This is seriously diminishing my enthusiasm. I'll try for a bit to come up with something different; if not, I guess I'll do this one and see what happens.

I think I've got it. My story's different enough that a small plot tweak would give it the separation it needs from its accidental lookalike. It's for the better, too. This tweak would make it more plausible and a much tighter narrative; I just need to work out the specifics. Okay, I've got one I'm happy with so add my name. Hey, what's the worst that can happen? {Devil me on my shoulder} "Hey, dude, go back and read your last contest entry." Do it. I get so weighed down sometimes by previous writing flops, and all it does is prevent me from writing and make me reluctant to learn from my mistakes because they're too shame-inducing to think about.

Oh I have, several times and compared it to my stories that have were much better received and with fewer errors. That led me to a decision on this entry.
