A great Noir Movie to watch is "The Cheap Detective" by Neil Simon on Amazon Prime.

I've written a fair amount of different parts of the story, yet I still don't have all the basics worked out. Namely, I still don't know why this premise is happening and even what exactly the protagonist is trying to accomplish. It's somewhat less bad than it sounds — it's along the lines of "these people have this type of conflict but I don't know why" — but still, I'll have to figure those fundamentals out really soon.
This is really a lot of fun though. I rarely have a story that's so not-stressful to write.

No inspiration yet, but I'm working on it. This is probably the most difficult creative writing challenge I've ever attempted. I will be ridiculously pleased with myself if I manage to piece something together that's even marginally readable.

So... all the ideas I brainstormed last week got tossed out the window. Got to kinda panicking last night because I hadn't started writing a thing yet, and all my ideas weren't feeling authentic. Trashed 'em all. Got a new idea this morning and decided to start hammering it out before it, too, started feeling false or cliche. Not sure how it'll fly, but at least I'm finally writing my entry. Got a busy week ahead, hope I can get it finished in time. Same, next week is super busy and if I'm going to have an entry I need to finish and polish it this week. Eek!

Not sure I'll have something in time. I have my premise, and a little bit of conflict, but right now it's just scattered ideas without anything to really bind it together. And lots of holes. So many holes it's like swiss cheese. Hopefully I can figure it out soon, otherwise I might have to sit this one out.

What the heck?!?! I think I've doomed myself. The story I just finished, well, I love it. BUT I cannot, for the life of me, work in the picture part of the prompt. If I try at this point it's going to royally screw up the flow, the naturalness, everything. Not sure what to do about it. Wish I had never stuck the picture into the prompt requirements. Never mind, just never mind. I'm going with what I have. Not expecting to win this thing anyway. Besides, I'm hosting, so it's not like I'd take a prize, so just screw it. This is my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Oh, well.

Quick question: What is the consensus on noir fiction NOT including any type of detective or private eye? Is that an acceptable concept? Opinions, please.

How's it going? I have a slight concept that hasn't come together and I haven't written the first sentence, lol. I want to sit down and try to get something solid this weekend if I can.

Quick question: What is the consensus on noir fiction NOT including any type of detective or private eye? Is that an acceptable concept? Opinions, please. I think that's perfectly fine. My understanding is that noir should be dark and gritty with morally questionable characters and has to involve a crime or crimes, but doesn't necessarily have to surround a detective. I believe I read where there is noir fiction involving professors, for example.

I believe I read where there is noir fiction involving professors, for example. Oh, yes, most definitely. In fact, I've been reading Noir short stories over the past week (a collection of "the century's best"), and not one of them (that I've run across) has a detective. Two have taken place on farms, with zero law enforcement in sight. All so far have involved downward spirals (or people stuck in situations) and murder, hidden or not, and unlikable main characters. (Though "main character" does not necessarily mean narrator or POV character.) Focus the story on the person who commits the crime/atrocity/etc. Have the story end on a bleak note.

Thanks to Raveneye and Mazulla for their helpful comments. I believe I have put together something worth submitting although, to be honest, I don't expect much from it. Still, the exercise in and of itself has been a challenge and that's never a bad thing.
