Mine is group 24 for: Comedy Tooting a horn "mode" Lord... Want to swap?! Haha. Oh Lord! That's the genre I was dreading most. I am sooo sorry. Last night I told my hubby, "I'd rather try my hand at anything besides comedy, even romance." Good thing about "tooting a horn" it can be done literally AND metaphorically. So you have options. As far as rowing a boat goes, I couldn't think of anything last night except someone literally rowing a boat and being chased by a sea monster. Yeah, not original. I wrote something up, but still. So ... I'll be brainstorming wilder ideas today. Edit: Oh, and I'm Raveneye on their forum, too. I signed up on the spreadsheet as a beta reader, if you want to exchange entries at some point. Or if you'd rather have a complete stranger look over your story, that's understandable, as they might be more objective than someone like me who is in your cheering section.

That's basically what I told my hubby yesterday, too, haha. So unlucky to get romance last year, and now comedy, lol. HOWEVER, while I went to bed last night without any ideas, I think I've got something decent now and just need to finish & tweak it. I had to go with more of a dark comedy for it to resonate better.
I'm more than happy to exchange entries if you want to send yours along! I should have mine ready later.

Deadline for the NYC Midnight Flash Fiction challenge is June 9th!
It's last minute myself, but I'm thinking this would be a lot of fun and a 48-hour time crunch would certainly get my arse in gear.

It's last minute myself, but I'm thinking this would be a lot of fun and a 48-hour time crunch would certainly get my arse in gear. Ooo! Good luck if you enter! I'm gonna have to skip this one, sadly. I love how they do their contests though, so when my plate is less piled with goodies, I'll do more from them. And, oh gosh, IF my 100 Word entry is fortunate enough to make the next round, I'm gonna be in trouble. We have tickets to a race up Pike's Peak on the very weekend Round 2 takes place. So, while I want my entry to be chosen, I have no idea how I'd manage to write something for Round 2 while sitting on a mountainside watching cars trying not to crash on the switchbacks. I'll have to lug my laptop along, I guess. Oh, well. Little chance of that anyway.

Mazulla -!!!!!!! Holy shit!!!!!! I placed 8th in my group!!!!!!! I get to advance to Round 2!!!!!! I cannot believe this. What is so damn tragic about it is that I'm going to be traveling this weekend and I have no idea how I'm going to write an entry and sub it, from a car, or a hotel, or the top of a mountain. Aaaaaaaargh!!!!

Aaaaaaaargh!!!! Ooh! Congratulations!! I'm sure you'll find a way! Might just be the perfect time for inspiration, eh? Thanks for the reminder, too. I almost forgot. I just checked mine but unfortunately didn't place. I guess dark humor for "comedy" wasn't quite what they're looking for, LOL. That's okay - there's always next year.

Aw, I'm so sad about that! Comedy has to be the hardest thing. Humor is so subjective. It's gotta be the "dirty card" to draw for a contest like this. Ugh. Watch, that'll be the genre I'm handed next. *hangs head in dread*
Just NOT political satire! Pleeeease not that.

Hah, then here's hoping you don't get a dreaded comedy or political satire prompt! Let me know what you end up with for your next assignment!
I didn't post an update before, but I also did their flash fiction challenge a couple weekends ago. I got the "mystery" genre for a 1,000 word story and the prompts were "a newly constructed house" (location) and "a diving board" (object). I was so stumped that I ended up having to go with a supernatural spin for the ending, so I'm hoping it's not too far outside the bounds of a "mystery" anymore.

OOO, that sounds like a fun prompt! My brain is spinning around those elements already. Crossing fingers your entry does well.

Damn, I'm doomed. Comedy. Why the hell, out of aaaaalll of these genres do they keep dooming people with this genre??? I'm so pissed. I could handle all of them but that. Even the example books and movies provided on the website definition of the genre? I have never heard of any of them. Meaning... I have no idea how to write this genre.

I definitely agree. It's such a cruel genre when, as you said before, it's such a subjective category. Did you end up getting any prompts you think you can work with?
Maybe you can write a humorous rant about NYC Midnight assigning a dreaded comedy genre to poor writers, lol.

LMAO! Why didn't I think of that? But yeah, I did a quick bit of research on the comedy genre before I crashed after midnight and scribbled some ideas. The only one that developed into anything was just a scenario about a guy trying to wrap a present for his mother, and managed to tie in some Alice in Wonderland references and make the whole thing rhyme with a sing-song rhythm. No idea if it'll fly, but I did manage to tweak it during the boring hours of crossing Oklahoma and Texas and submitted it that night at our hotel in Colorado Springs. Anyway... it's the best I could do under the circumstances. So whatever... LOL.
