NYC Midnight will hold a 250 word writing competition in November: www.nycmidnight.com/250There is an entry fee, however there is a list of nonprofits (of your choice) where it may be donated. Judges will review and give feedback for each entry, regardless if it is a winning entry in your category. They have competitions from flash fiction, to poetry, to screenplays, etc. I participated in their 100 word competition a few months ago and, while I didn't place in my group, I did receive an honorable mention and good feedback from the judges.

Wow, that sounds fun. Questions: it says writers are placed in groups. Does that mean they collaborate on a single story or do they write individual pieces? Is there a platform for the groups to connect, or do they remain anonymous? (nix that last question -- looks like there is a forum) How much was the fee? And are you participating this year?

So, from my experience, it is individual pieces and not collaborative. The participants are split up into groups of 50, then they compete within that group for top 3. Those that win move on to the next round(s) and compete against others that were top 3 in their group (and the groups get smaller). But, each group is assigned different prompts - genre, word, and action. For example, my group was "Romance" (blech!), "clip," and "biting into an apple." I was a bit envious of those with "ghost story," "tall tale," "supernatural," or something of that genre. I believe the entry fee was about $30, though I think it's cheaper the earlier you register. My muse has been super fickle for a while and I haven't registered yet, but since it's only 250 words, I probably will.

Oh gosh, it would totally suck to be given a genre one doesn't like or know how to write in. But it would still be a great challenge. Hmmm, contemplating going for it...

NYC Midnight's registration is open for their short story competition: "The 17th annual Short Story Challenge kicking off on January 20, 2023, is a competition that challenges writers around the world to create short stories based on genre, subject, and character assignments in as little as 24 hours. Feedback from the judges is provided for every submission and writers keep all the rights to the stories they create." Again, registration fees will be donated to a nonprofit of your choice (from their list). $52 for early registration, $62 after Dec. 8th. Link & Details: www.nycmidnight.com/ssc

Oh man, I wanna do this! So much going on right now. It's exciting and overwhelming. Currently doing Fractured Lit's micro fiction contest. Second round will be wrapped up November 30, so if NYC Midnight's contest stays on my radar, I can make the early registration deadline.
