NYC Midnight will hold a 250 word writing competition in November: www.nycmidnight.com/250There is an entry fee, however there is a list of nonprofits (of your choice) where it may be donated. Judges will review and give feedback for each entry, regardless if it is a winning entry in your category. They have competitions from flash fiction, to poetry, to screenplays, etc. I participated in their 100 word competition a few months ago and, while I didn't place in my group, I did receive an honorable mention and good feedback from the judges.

Wow, that sounds fun. Questions: it says writers are placed in groups. Does that mean they collaborate on a single story or do they write individual pieces? Is there a platform for the groups to connect, or do they remain anonymous? (nix that last question -- looks like there is a forum) How much was the fee? And are you participating this year?

So, from my experience, it is individual pieces and not collaborative. The participants are split up into groups of 50, then they compete within that group for top 3. Those that win move on to the next round(s) and compete against others that were top 3 in their group (and the groups get smaller). But, each group is assigned different prompts - genre, word, and action. For example, my group was "Romance" (blech!), "clip," and "biting into an apple." I was a bit envious of those with "ghost story," "tall tale," "supernatural," or something of that genre. I believe the entry fee was about $30, though I think it's cheaper the earlier you register. My muse has been super fickle for a while and I haven't registered yet, but since it's only 250 words, I probably will.

Oh gosh, it would totally suck to be given a genre one doesn't like or know how to write in. But it would still be a great challenge. Hmmm, contemplating going for it...

Oh man, I wanna do this! So much going on right now. It's exciting and overwhelming. Currently doing Fractured Lit's micro fiction contest. Second round will be wrapped up November 30, so if NYC Midnight's contest stays on my radar, I can make the early registration deadline.

NYC Midnight will hold an upcoming 100-word microfiction competition: www.nycmidnight.com/100From their website: "The 4th Annual 100-word Microfiction Challenge is a competition that challenges writers around the world to create very short stories no longer than 100 words in 24 hours. In the 1st Round (April 28-29, 2023), writers are placed randomly in groups and are assigned a genre, action, and word assignment." There is an entry fee, which is donated to a nonprofit of your choice (from their list). All entrants will receive feedback, regardless of being a winning entry or not.
Probably going to enter this one again and hope for a better assignment than last year's "romance" category! Lol.

Right?! Good grief, to be assigned a random genre though??? That's the biggie that freaks me out. Still... so tempting.

P.S. Well, Mazulla, I registered. Looks like I'll be writing some random something on April 28. Sweet. The date for the 2nd round, at the end of June, is already marked on my calendar as a family event, so IF I'm selected for that round, I'll have to finagle something to get a second entry written and subbed. But one step at a time. Lord, I'll know I'm meant to fail to progress if I get handed a genre like Comedy or Political Satire. Crossing fingers the prompts are something I can work with.

Glad this piqued your interest, too. I'm all signed up for this year's as well. I know, it's so nerve-wracking with the random prompts! But I remember seeing a lot of good ones like sci-fi, ghost stories, noir, etc. But, I look at it as a good challenge even if it's outside the normal comfort zone.

Yes, it will be a challenge, no doubt. I'd probably be less nervous if I had a week to research any odd genre I'd get handed. But 24 hours to write and sub? I'm definitely not regretting entering though.

Mazulla - OMG, this begins tomorrow!!! Kinda freaking out here. What the heck is our prompt going to be??? ... ... I know!! And I ALMOST forgot until I checked my e-mail this morning! It's going to be interesting, for sure! If not a little nervewracking, lol. Wouldn't it be funny if we ended up with the same one?! Nonetheless, good luck to your entry & I hope you (we!) get an awesome prompt!

Nonetheless, good luck to your entry & I hope you (we!) get an awesome prompt! I have to admit it. I'm totally freaking out. This WAITING! FIVE hours to go, and how the heck am I gonna sleep tonight until I've written something? This is crazy. So I looked at last year's prompts (they're still out there somewhere), and that sorta helped, and sorta backfired. Some of those genre/action/word combinations were nuts. Here's to us getting a not-impossible prompt.

Okay, Mazulla. I got my email and link. Looks like I'm in Group 54, and my assignment is not terrible. Yay.
Horror Rowing a boat "pit"
I can work with that.
