Hey all, I am doing a small project, mostly conceptual, about the effects that the visual and auditory surroundings may have on the writing process. So if anyone has the time it would be great to get some answers to some these questions: - What, if any, environment do you personally consider to be the most conducive to your writing?
- Do you think listening to music is useful when writing?
- Do you think any other kind of sound is useful when writing? (such as having a movie play in the background, or the chatter of people in a café etc.)
- Do you ever take inspiration, or become motivated, but visual elements during the writing process?
- Do you consider the interface of your writing software to have any effect on your writing?
- Do you think having a fitting environment to your writing subject is useful? (listening to western music while writing about cowboys, or having the lights turned off while writing a scary story etc.)
Or anything else you think may be inspirational or motivational about you surrounding when you write.

So if anyone has the time it would be great to get some answers to some these questions: - What, if any, environment do you personally consider to be the most conducive to your writing? (me alone behind a locked door)
- Do you think listening to music is useful when writing? (yes, ambient sounds, no voices or beats)
- Do you think any other kind of sound is useful when writing? (such as having a movie play in the background, or the chatter of people in a café etc.) (none come to mind. But repetitive sounds are extremely harmful to focus: beats, drips, doves and bluejays outside the window)
- Do you ever take inspiration, or become motivated, but visual elements during the writing process? (yes, art at places like DeviantART)
- Do you consider the interface of your writing software to have any effect on your writing? (not really, I use MS Word)
- Do you think having a fitting environment to your writing subject is useful? (listening to western music while writing about cowboys, or having the lights turned off while writing a scary story etc.) (as long as answer to question 1 is in place, all is good, but I have lowered the lights when writing horror)
Or anything else you think may be inspirational or motivational about you surrounding when you write. So what's the project?

Its a UX design project, trying to utilize machine learning to generate dynamic digital environments based on interpreting the text of a writer as they write. Admittedly not a writing project. I hope its not too off-topic, I assumed that general discussion would be a suitable place to ask these kinds of questions.

Its a UX design project, trying to utilize machine learning to generate dynamic digital environments based on interpreting the text of a writer as they write. Sounds interesting. I can't tell whether or not I'd enjoy using something like that or find it helpful. I guess I'd have to try it out to know. What, if any, environment do you personally consider to be the most conducive to your writing?Something comfortable and private. I concentrate the best indoors at home, sitting on the sofa with my laptop since it's physically comfortable and, being where I spend most of my time, neutral to me so it doesn't present a distraction. I also sometimes write outside in my backyard. I concentrate less well because of all the environmental stimulation, but I feel outdoor scenery makes me feel less 'confined.' Do you think listening to music is useful when writing? Sometimes. Music can evoke a strong aesthetic or atmosphere that matches the aesthetic or atmosphere of my story. There was one time that a song felt so much the way I wanted my story to feel that I listened to it on repeat until the story was done. Energetic music can also make me write faster and feel more inventive. Do you think any other kind of sound is useful when writing? (such as having a movie play in the background, or the chatter of people in a café etc.)Yes. I very much like listening to ambient noises such as water sounds online. I find it soothing so my mood stays good enough to write. It also makes me feel like I've designated the time specifically as writing time. Do you ever take inspiration, or become motivated, but visual elements during the writing process?Yes, I do get ideas or get interested in things based on things I see spontaneously. Do you consider the interface of your writing software to have any effect on your writing? Yes. I don't want the interface to look like the writing software I use for my work; otherwise it feels boring because I associate it with work. Do you think having a fitting environment to your writing subject is useful? (listening to western music while writing about cowboys, or having the lights turned off while writing a scary story etc.)
Yes. I've indeed turned off the lights when brainstorming for a horror story and sat outside in a nature spot when writing a poem that uses nature imagery.
