A while back I did a Batman story where his protégé/adopted son Dick Greyson assumed the mantle of Batman following the passing of Bruce Wayne. Ironically enough this was before DC made that canon, the difference with mine is that dead means dead.
I have always been interested in turning this into an original story. There have been fics that I've even read that I thought would make an good original work of fiction. Ever had a situation where you did a fan fic and turned it into something that is your own or perhaps written a story that was loosely inspired by either another story or from a movie/tv show?

Um, yes. It's embarrassing to admit now. I was so enthralled with Disney's REDACTED that I invented my own version of it. I finished the novel just out of college (which shows my childlike mind at the time). A fortune was spent on a topnotch education, and I graduate to write derivative junk. Lovely. Of course, I changed the names, most of the circumstances of the REDACTED's powers, moved the setting and timeline, etc., even if the plot was pretty much the same.
It was a good learning experience, if nothing else. The main lesson was that it's hard to write historical (even if it's a fantasy set in our world) because research is necessary, and tedious if you can't get your hands on the information you need. The second lesson I learned was derivative work is something I'd rather stay away from. Full on fanfiction is fun, but only if it's private, between me, myself, and I, and doesn't suck too much time from publishable, original work.
Good question, by the way!

There are several bestsellers that are fanfics turned into publishable fiction. The most famous being 50 Shades of Grey (Twilight fanfic). Recently, The Love Hypothesis originally started as Reylo fanfic (Rey/Kylo star wars). Same with Go Hex Yourself. Also, Cassandra Clare's series The Mortal Instruments was originally Harry Potter fanfic.
As for me, I used to write HP fanfic but I haven't turned it into a publishable story. But I think fanfic is a great way to open the door to original stories based on something people already adore.

That is how I feel. Most writers would balk at fanfiction but if there's a good story you can craft from it then fanfiction might be that muse you didn't expect.

I think they forget where alot of us come from, including themselves. How many retailing's of Robin Hood and King Arthur are out there? Most of those are for lack of a better term "fan fic." Or the only difference between books based on popular media like Star Wars, Star Trek, and Aliens are they get published. Rigt now I am currently working on turning Warhammer Fantasy (started the game at tail end of 6th edition in mid 2000's near the time I graduated Highschool), and still mis the world Games Work Shop decided to take out back like Ol' Yeller. I think authors of a certain generation are a little more protective of their work, as its their baby. Even then not all of them are. HP Lovecraft for all the isms he was, liked it when other authors took elements of his work to expand his universe as it allowed others to work on ideas he didn't have and maybe give him food for thought.
