Empty Shell

I drift gracefully between here and there, then and now, above and below.
It is a pleasant plane of existence, free from constraint.
They try to rouse me with memory triggers.
A waving vane of cards. I recognize spades and hearts. Three of one. Four of the other.
"Gin," they murmur.
Uncrowned pieces of red and black endlessly traverse a checkerboard in diagonal fashion.
"King me," they whisper.
These things mean nothing. They are but mere brambleberries that prick with delicacy, bring only fleeting satisfaction and, in the end, not worth the effort.
"Please return to us, Juliet," they urge.
But, there is no Juliet.
There is no...anyone.
