ok some of these are just frustrating lol. Who comes up with these themes!? LOL! Sadists? What's frustrating to me is when there's a great theme, I get a cool idea going, then see I don't fit the author demographic. I mean, I get why some zines are focusing on demographics, but sheesh. Ought story be considered before a person's race, disability, or gender? I mean, if I said in a cover letter that I had a prosthetic leg, just to fit the demographic, who is gonna come to my house and lift up my pant leg to check? "Damn, that's a great story, but you have all your limbs, so we won't publish it..." Anyway, while I support the limited demographic thing, it also pisses me off when I'm forbidden to enter their hallowed halls because I'm white, cysgender, heterosexual, and healthy. I really said I was never going to mention any of those things on this forum, and I have no desire to argue or debate. I just want fiction to be blind even while it exposes truth, and for story to come before every other consideration. Story. Story above all.

Thanks for sharing! I think I have one I can submit in a category, but I only have a few days left. Hopefully I can prod some friends into doing a read through on the story first to get any final tweaks in.

FUTURE CATS. That's a theme. I yelled in frustration when I got to that one because each one before it sucked, too. Okay I'm being too harsh probably, but none of these themes are things I would ever consider writing about. The music industry? Nope. At least two calls for detectives (fantasy and sci-fi). Yes they can be used to inspire stories I've never thought about before, but my brain doesn't work well under duress. It's a miracle I come up with anything for the contests and those themes are usually really broad.
BUT HEY! Grumpy Old Fairy Tales wants new takes on Grimm's fairy tales! I got that twisted sleeping beauty story I could submit.

Does that count as "future cats"? This post cracks me up. Three of these themes sorta resonated with me. The horror stories involving the deep sea, the Gothic fiction, and the Baba Yaga one. Though the one that's taking off the fastest is the Gothic fiction. Just seeking a "clever" twist/ending before I can start writing. It's amazing how many of these prompts I begin and never finish, though.

It's amazing how many of these prompts I begin and never finish, though. The deep sea theme is pretty cool actually, I'd at least read that anthology even if I don't hav any story ideas fo it. The Lovecraftian theme is actually prickling little story ideas in my brain right now... One of my dream/nightmare contest failures might actually fit this prompt REALLY well. Don't think I can write is before January 1st. I have so much going on between then and now. Plus I am NOT good at historical pieces. If that wasn't a requirement, I'd probably dive in. Personally, I think a Lovecraftian horror story set in the 1990s might be kind of fun to read IF ONLY they allowed recent history to count instead of preferring before the 20th century.

I was just thinking of someone I'd encountered on an online chatroom and how I now know how I could've helped him better. Then I remembered "letters i'll never send" from this list. And hey, I actually fit the demographic restriction. Hope what I have in mind is what they're looking for.
