The Watch
Shalmania was enjoying the Gray Mares Trail waterfall. The autumn breeze smelling of mint and lavender, and the cool water cascading over her body. As a huge bi-pedal wolf came to the edge of the pool, the water turned warm and red. It sniffed the air as her dream dissolved into smoke. She was putting her robe on as Cordelia, her assistant entered her room, fear gripping her face.
“We saw your dream, high priestess. Is all okay?”
“Yes I am. Did anyone recognize what was seen?”
“No, we’re searching the records. The scrying mirror for Giant’s Ring went black.”

Swan Song
Ava studied the patterns of migratory birds. She envied their ability to view the world from above as they traveled instinctively toward their destination. No inhibiting thoughts. No unnecessary trappings to keep a miserable soul earthbound. Songbirds, water fowl, raptors. Ava coveted the unfettered freedom of each and every one.
To skim the surface of cascading waterfalls. To riffle the leaves of the tallest redwood. To graze the distant horizon where dusk dallied with dawn.
Was there a more perfect existence?
From the headland, her graceful spirit fused with the musical rush of wind and wings as she embraced the intoxicating plummet.

Downstream
The river like moonlight is most beautiful here, where it narrows and descends into a cascade. My daughters, laughing, splash each other with the silvery light, so much like that which renders our comfort in the night.
My people don’t know what happens in the walled city. We can only see ordinary water flow in and a spectacular shimmering current flow out, to the eye almost more moonbeam than liquid. One night, I rode alone to the city and put my ear to the wall that I may learn the secret. But all I heard was foreign babble, swift rapids.
