Haunted
My eyes cast down, reliving in what I have done with my life. Still, she is here, she judges me – for so long my greatest fan and my greatest critic. I sigh, looking into the twilight, her ghostly presence still with me after all these years.
“Why are you still here?” I whisper, “You’re dead!”
“To you I am not,” She smiles reassuringly her hand caressing my cheek like a cool breeze, “You are as abrasive as the harshest cactus sometimes, but you are still a good man – and still mine at heart!”
I smile allowing myself one fleeting moment of emotion, “That will never change!”

Caveat Emptor
If a potential customer asked for a closer look at one of her many varieties of cactus, she informed them that she sold succulents, not cacti. Ignoramuses! And heaven forbid anyone should imply purchasing her Juniperus communis to harvest the berries for gin. The very thought percolated her blood pressure. Alcohol was the devil's own brew!
She always followed up with consumers to ensure the plants were not being abused. Transgressors were lured back to the garden center with promises of deeply discounted bargains.
Once there, she introduced them to the colossal Venus flytrap residing at the rear of the south-facing hothouse.

Infamy
Wind swept past unyielding cactus among the terrain, whirling with fine dust and sand. The infamous Cora Cosgrave and her band climbed atop the horses waiting patiently for their masters, saddlebags fully laden. The group had suffered a beating, but no worse than their previous escapades. At least, for those that remained; old Hank didn't have it so lucky. But then, that was expected in their profession.
Putting distance between the bodies lying around a carriage in the scorching heat, they spotted several riders donning navy blue. Cora smiled, then all readied themselves for what could be their last stand.
