Do you ever start a poem knowing what to write about, but not the words for it?
When I have a poetry idea, which isn't often, it usually starts with some words. I might be thinking about something, put the thought into words in my head, and decide that the phrase I happened upon is worthy of a poem. Or sometimes the idea is words to begin with; I'd come up with a phrase I like and write something around it. But for this Legends Contest, I have an idea but not the words. I'm really not used to writing a poem in a top-down way like that.
What do you do to find the words? Just talk to yourself about the idea until you get to some words that sound good? Pick a poetic form and try to fill it? Even just play around with some vaguely relevant words and phrases and then secondarily hammer them to fit your idea?

Very good post. I’ll google synonyms, words that rhyme. If nothing fits, change the word and or line.

Oh, gosh. I'm so random with poems. I guess I don't even write poetry unless there's a prompt like this pushing me to. I've been wanting to change that tho.
When I have no idea what I want to write about, I do some free writing on the prompt, jotting down lines or words as fast as they will come until something sticks, the lightbulb goes on, and the poem takes off.
The method was taught in a poetry seminar I took in college. Up to that time, I hadn't ever written poetry, so I was coming at it cold with no process already in place, so that's what I've stuck with. It works for me.
Mainly, it useful because most of the first ideas you jot down are surface ideas, toss-away ideas, cliches, etc. Farther along, you get deeper into the personal stuff, the real stuff, and that's where the poem is lurking.

Honestly what I do with poetry (when it doesn't just come to my mind) is do an exercise in free writing, just start writing with your end goal or subject in mind and just straight up write whatever words fall out of your little fingers.
Most the time, that helps me at lest.

It has been so long since I even attempted to write poetry... which of course qualifies me completely to comment on this subject I think the art of poetry is best expressed through raw emotion and unstudied thought. When you write do not worry about the words or how they sound or if something might work better here or there. Just write it down as best you can... and edit it later. If you can get into an almost meditative state then do this, all the better. Now i made myself want to write poetry again... because I totally have time for it right now... totally!
