I’ve read about this and I’m not sure what make of it. I like the concept but providing 3 chapters free for each series vs. bundling them as a .99 e-book. Several here have far more published books and stories so I’m interested in any feedback about it from an authors and readers POV.

Several here have far more published books and stories so I’m interested in any feedback about it from an authors and readers POV. Huh, I hadn't heard of this. Interesting concept. If it's available for books that have already been published, I might try it with the first book of my Falcons Saga, to see if it can grab some new readers. And that series is already formatted properly. And it might be fun to try it with my Sanjen stories. Not sure though. I'll have to do lots more research. I do not like the idea of bundling the finished book at .99. Um, no. So if that's the case, then I might give it a miss. But I'm wondering if this is a sign that publishing is heading toward a "subscription" thing, which is nauseating.

Raveneye, the book doesn’t have to be bundled as an e-book, I was only referring to the 3 free chapters vs, doing that.
It seems that 35-40 keys is an ballpark for opening new chapters.

Hmm, weird. Yeah, I'm gonna have to do more research. Readers gotta earn/buy keys, so who gets the money? Guessing royalties are still figured into this somehow, depending on how much a key is worth.
Still, it sounds pretty cool. It's surely a sells gimmick and sounds like an Amazon club, but it sounds fun. I can see the attraction it would have for certain types of consumers.
Will you give it a try?

The way I understand it. A reader buys 200 keys for $2 or .01 each x 30 keys for a chapter is $.30/2= .15/ person/chapter. Now if the reader buys the keys at a lower rate.
Better check about stories already published.
I might. A .99 e-book earns .35. I’d have to have 5 readers pay for a 4th chapter to equal 1 e-book sale.
The difference between us is you have the reader base, not sure of the stories. I have the stories, no reader base. I’ll check on the size of an episode((What Amazon calls them). I do see potential. The episodes don’t have to pick up were the other ended, only after it. Think a star trek or Dr. Who episode.

This seems to be Amazon's way of getting into the web-novel/web-serial market. It's quite popular here (and unless I'm mistaken, in other East Asian countries like China, South Korea and Japan as well), but I'm not sure how big of a market or demand there is for this kind of thing in the West.
Still, it seems like an interesting experiment. I'm wondering (maybe hoping) if we'll see a small revival of pulp fiction.

You mean I'm competing with Amazon for that! How did they discover my diabolical plan?

Still, it seems like an interesting experiment. I'm wondering (maybe hoping) if we'll see a small revival of pulp fiction. That's a good point. Vella causes me to wonder what kind of reader is on the rise in the West. Short attention spans are certainly prominent these days, so short content is a plus. However, attention spans can be so extremely short that "readers" are likely to forget returning for later episodes before they're on to the next thing. "Serious" readers in the West, I do believe, still prefer to sit down with a full-length novel all at once, rather than have it spoon-fed to them in tiny chunks separated by days or weeks. AND Vella is the sort of thing that probably will promote pulp fiction. So it's probably safe to predict a rise of shorter entertainment-driven fiction in places like Vella. If one has a talent for writing that kind of thing, and pushes quantity over quality, Vella is probably going to be extremely lucrative. Hmm... pros and cons to everything I guess. Thanks for these links, Pel! That helps a ton.

Could we or Legendfire use this (Vella) for our litterbug Junction story's?
Call in an anthology and the precedes go to Legengfire?
Put say 1k words each for the three free chapters, then 2-3 k for those that follow?

Put say 1k words each for the three free chapters, then 2-3 k for those that follow? The reason we're doing an LF publication for free at Smashwords is to avoid the money issue. Proceeds sound all well and good, but somebody still has to handle the earnings via an account and pay taxes and stuff on whatever's earned. This is one of the several reasons we avoided doing any non-free publication at Old LegendFire, despite the many times someone suggested it.

I'm in numerous facebook groups that are talking about kindle vella. It's still very new of course but there's excitement and skepticism. Like any new thing. It reminds me of wattpad, right? Releasing chapters one or two at a time. Following a series as it comes out. I think it sounds fun and maybe good for short story compilations, too.

I’ve been thinking about it but the first three chapters as freebies concerns me as Right now I only have 1 story to put up there.

The idea reads as a fun experiment. Amazon has the $$$ to back it for a time. Now will it produce better content than what you see on other online sites? Not the best comparison, but Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, or Fanfict.net could easily get ousted.
