Hello to all,
I guess this is my introduction post. I'll try to keep it short, but short messages are not my forte, so bear with me.
My name is Melanie, I'm 44 years old and the mother of two teenagers. I work part time as a medical technologist, hence the name LabRat.
I've been writing since I was a kid, but didn't start taking it seriously until about 5 years ago, at which time I started writing an original manuscript instead of my usual fan fiction. My genre is Christian romance, mostly contemporary, but I've had an idea for a historical romance floating around in my head for the past 20 years. Just haven't had the time to research the time period.
After two years I finished the first draft, and the following year I entered the first five pages in a local writing contest. Out of three judges, two of them gave me decent scores (although they had conflicting comments) and the third judge was downright brutal. Their words felt like a knife buried to the hilt in my chest.
Here I am, two years after that wound was inflicted, and I'm still not completely healed. Several times, I have felt a pull back to that manuscript (usually when I see a seagull on my way to work) but when I open up the file, those critical words come back to the surface and I can't do it.
I'm hoping that this group will help me to get my confidence back, and help me to thicken up my thin skin to accept critique better.
And a huge thank you to ScienceGirl for inviting me - sorry it took so long for me to work up the courage to join. 🙂
I guess that's it. If I forgot anything, ask away. I'm busy this week with work and getting ready for a family vacation next week, but I'll try to post something soon.

Hi, LabRat! So glad you finally joined us!
LabRat is my sister from another mister!!! Real-life bestie even though we live about 10 hours away and are always so busy it's hard to find quality time to talk. Or write. Or sleep. Or breathe. But she is my truest, most faithful friend, so be kind to her!!! I know you all will.

Family!!! I am so excited to have you, LabRat.
Ugh, criticism can be so brutal if you're unprepared for it, and can be brutal even if you are. We've all been there. Even though I've been at this game for 20 years, it still takes me a few days to work up the courage to read critiques I receive, and a few days more to swallow the comments and start applying them. It takes guts to keep wading in, so I applaud you for having the courage to take this step and take a risk on folks you don't know. It's especially rough in the early days when every comment feels like a razor blade. Stick with it, and you'll get through it. The best advice that helped me adjust was "What wording benefits the reader?" and "In the end, this is business, not personal."
And Monica is a amazing. We learn so much from her.
I hope you'll soon be comfortable here, LabRat. There's no pressure to post your own work. Commenting on the writing of others is a valuable learning experience too.
If you have questions, please ask.

Hi! Welcome! Super cool you and ScienceGirl are so close. <3
Your experience sounds so painful. I was just talking with my husband about how sometimes when we critique things (especially in contests) we tend to forget the praise aspect. We gotta highlight what we enjoyed and what the author did well. It's just as important as giving suggestions for improvement. That's what you'll find here at LF. Encouragement and genuine critiques meant to inspire and uplift. Hope you can keep writing your manuscript and maybe post a little on the forums.

Greetings and salutations LabRat and welcome to our corner of the institute. Nurse Ratchet isn't as bad as she seems. ScienceGirl is excellent but has this weird desire to use rolling pins. Hope that manuscript pulling you to it lights your life up, to expose your beautiful wings.

Pel, it's quite ironic that I just inherited my grandfather's old lard rendering paddle and my grandmother's old rolling pin. I have not quite made it to the level of Rapunzel-style frying pans, though. So we're probably all safe here. LabRat is such a good friend that I named a main character after her in my last book You two could probably help each other a lot with confidence.

Hey, welcome to the site!
That sounds like a painful experience. I hope you'll be able to feel comfortable here, and I hope you'll slowly get back to writing.
