Okay, authors of spec fic, game designers, sci-fi/fantasy lovers!
If you want to learn from the pros, if you want to mingle with some of the hottest voices in spec fic today, then now is your chance. Nebula Conference 2021 is going to be online again this year. It will take place the entire weekend of June 4-6. Anyone with a little extra cash burning a hole in their pocket can buy a ticket and attend a full weekend of discussion panels which should be rich in information about writing, publishing, etc.
If SFWA is doing the same thing this year, you'll have opportunities to request a mentor, participate in chatrooms, have exclusive access to afterparties, and a year's worth of goodies they'll have planned. The exclusive access starts this very week!
A quote from the newsletter:I attended last year, and it was amazing. So worth the money -- and is waaaaay cheaper than tickets, air travel, hotel, and food cost that come with attending a live event. You can wear your pajamas!!! If nothing else, listening to the discussion panels will give you a boost. You'll get to hear that your favorite authors are just as human and nervous and star-struck and struggling as the rest of us. We are not alone, and conferences are great at communicating this to isolated writers. If you've never attended a writing conference, start here. You'll be safe in the comfort of your own home.
The two coolest things that happened last year were (1) I got to watch the launch of the Whatever-It-Was-Called rocket with beloved sci-fi authors, and (2) in the middle of the weekend, a package arrived at my door. It contained a gorgeous cocktail glass with the Nebula logo on it. I had no idea my ticket included swag. Hoping it does this year too.
You can register for Nebula Con at SFWA's Events Page. <-- Right there! Clicky clicky. Set up a non-member account -- unless, of course, you are a qualifying member of SFWA.
Does $125 look like too much? This is for your writing career! What are you waiting for? An invitation? Consider yourself invited.

You can do it! According to my calendar, there are 5 paydays until Nebula con, that means saving $25 each check. Maybe doable?

Bumping this one more time. I got the email today confirming that I've been assigned a mentor for one hour next Saturday. This will mark the first time I've ever signed up to participate in a conference as other than just an attendee. I'll have a one-on-one with someone in the know about the topics I need most help with. I hope. I'm scared to death.

Well, the mentoring session went well. Got most of my questions answered. Nothing too ground-breaking, but it was good info from a sweet writer so eager to help and encourage.
Also! The session topics are out. Looks like there's something for everybody. Very diverse. I think I'll attend the following panels:
"Crafting the First Line" "Maintaining a Good Relationship With Your Agent" "Being Your Own Marketer & Publicist" "Building an Anti-Racist Workshop" "Bridging Verse and Prose in Speculative Writing" "It's My Story, Too!" (about compelling side characters) "Interrogating Scare Tactics" (trends in horror writing) "Thinking Big, Publishing Small" "Assembling a Short Story Collection" "Hanging Up Your Shingle" (starting one's own freelance editorial) "Taking Marginalization to Aquisitions" "Writing Through Pain and Fatigue" "Worldbuilding in Tight Spaces" (quick worldbuilding for short stories) "Beyond the Three-Act Structure"
Whew, lots of stuff we've been discussing right here on the forum, and stuff that I figure will address current projects, including the Compendium.
The session topics that I will miss are:
MIDDLE GRADE AND YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE… IN SPAAAAACE! ACTUALLY WRITING THE COMIC YOU PROMISED WHAT SHELTERING-IN TEACHES US ABOUT OUR SPECULATIVE WORLDS THIS AIN’T THE HERO’S JOURNEY: WRITING FOR VIDEO GAMES HOMETOWN HEROES: WORKING AND WRITING GLOBALLY SPEED DATE A SCIENTIST (discussions of science that will transform the future) SETTING BOUNDARIES (healthy relationship between author and readers) NALO HOPKINSON IN CONVERSATION (this year's grand master) TAXES AND FINANCES FOR NON-U.S. WRITERS PUBLISHING IN THE UNITED STATES BEYOND SUPERHEROES: INDIE SCIENCE FICTION GRAPHIC NOVEL SHOWCASE WRITING SPECULATIVE JUSTICE DUDE, WHERE’S MY FLYING CAR? NASA’S FUTURE OF AVIATION TRANSITIONING TO TABLETOP GAMES WRITING BY OUR POWERS COMBINED: WRITING COLLABORATIVELY HOW QUARANTINE HAS CHANGED THE MIDDLE GRADE AND YOUNG ADULT MARKETS WRITING AND PARENTING: FINDING BALANCE AND TIME
Good grief, they offer a lot of stuff each year. It must be humungous to come up with topics and find folks to talk on all these subjects.

Omigosh, this thing starts tomorrow! I thought I had a few days left to get my head wrapped around the idea of being fed info through a water hose. Uh, this means I may not be available for the next three or four days as I get overloaded with hours of awesome information.

This year's conference was three days of AWESOME. What a privilege to be able to attend and learn from masters and new authors alike. So much good info on all aspects of the writing and publishing industry. Got so much out of it! If the conference is held in person next year, I understand, but I will mourn.
