It's teatime. Whether writing historical or a genre like Steampunk, you gotta know the rules of etiquette before your characters can meaningfully break them. One piece of Hollywood nonsense that has falsely shaped our understand of teatime is especially glaring: Whatever you do, do NOT stick out your pinky finger.

This immediately made me think of that scene from Inglorious Basterds, and now I need a Victorian drama where the main character pegs the spy in the royal court because they put the spoon down on the left.
Also WHAT? You're not supposed to have your pinky out? I thought this was where that whole thing started, that you sip your drinks with pinky out because you're fancy.

I know, right! And I would be doomed over the spoon as well, since I stir with my left hand. And, I admit, I like to dunk scones and those Danish cookies you can only buy at Christmas time. So primitive! Raveneye, you uncouth American, you!

My characters will play with the teabag by tugging it by the strings like a fishing rod. Once the water smells like tea they will remove the teabag from the mug, heat up their metallic spoon inside the tea which they will use to dump three spoonfuls of cold sweet condense milk into their tea which they will obnoxiously stir into a whirlpool with lots of clanging noises. Which they will gulp down half a cup and contemplate the chore of brewing one more or save the other half for later. Oh and depending if they are making for other people, they will use the same spoon and leave that spoon in the last cup they stirred.

Yum Bilance! That made me want some tea with condensed milk. I usually just do whole milk because that's what I have in the fridge but you made condensed sound so delish.
I'll just do my two main characters. Raine takes it with lots of sugar, no cream or milk. Except for black tea. Then it's lots of heavy cream if available. Darq hates tea in all forms, but will reluctantly sip it if necessary. He feels like it's just flavored water and doesn't see the point.

They aren't fussed but if it's purple they pour it down the sink in an anger and little bit of jealousy haha. This is what one of my characters does with tea made from tree leaves in one of my stories.

I love imagining scenarios like this for characters, even if they never actually do these things -- but what WOULD they like, if they did. Like for my high fantasy novel series, I kept playing games like this: What would Kelyn drink? (red wine or whiskey) What would his twin Kieryn drink? (absinthe) What would Kelyn smoke, if such a thing existed? (Cuban cigars) What would Kieryn smoke? (matte-black cigarillos (I have no idea if such a thing exists, but it should)) What would Kelyn drive, if cars were a thing? (an armored Hummer) What would Kieryn drive? (a glossy black Lamborghini, or maybe a Bugatti (get out of his way)) 'Twas a fun exercise when determining the differences in their personalities. Kinda off topic there, but whatever.

Oh, sweethearts. I'm on a 5-cup-a-day habit and I WILL grasp the bowl with my hands, thank you jolly much, sirrah.
Fully agree with only adding the milk after boiling the tea, though. Wha savagery to even consider doing otherwise.

It's fun to surmise what habits and practices would draw gasps and scathing articles in the society pages if we were to take the time machine back a 150 years. Sheesh, who policed these things?

"On absolutely no occasion should one's eyes meet with another guest"? How bizarre! So did people back then just drink their tea while trying to awkwardly avert each other's gaze? Or do they have full conversations while staring into their teacups or some random spot on the ceiling?
I can only imagine the gossip : Lady One: I must say, that Ms Perkins has manners that are quite unbecoming of a lady of her stature. Have you heard news of her embarrassing conduct when she was invited for tea at Mrs Willington's?
Lady Two: I haven't. Pray tell, what exactly did she do?
Lady One: *lowers voice to a whisper* She looked at Mrs Willington when they were drinking tea.
Lady Two: That horrible creature! Poor Mrs Willington! To have been subjected to such scandalous behaviour! In her own house! *fans herself*
