Heads up! LegendFire has a warning system for a small set of infractions, most of which are outlined on the RULES page. Read the RULES post to understand why certain behaviors are important to us and which ones will bring down the hammer.
The Warning System:
ABUSING THE SHOUTBOX
Defined: using the shoutbox for any reason than its intended purpose, such as personal therapy sessions or world-building/plot-building/character-building conversations or other single-topic discussions involving a single member running the show and dominating the shoutbox for hours on end. Move lengthy discussions to PMs, a post, or an offsite chatroom.
Level: 5
ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR
Defined: intentional or unintentional harm dealt to another member through words, attitudes, and/or conduct. This includes degrading other members or their works of fiction, non-fiction, or poetry; engaging in flame wars by promoting harmful rhetoric. This applies for all areas of the forum, including posts, PMs, shoutbox.
Exceptions: Predatory invitations or fishing will receive an automatic ban. Harassment via forum posts or PMs will result in an automatic ban.
Level: 50 (2 warnings equals 100% = ban)
Other Actions Possible: Account Disable, ban
FLAMING = falls under abusive behavior at LF and merits the same penalty.
Defined: “hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users, often involving the use of profanity. It is frequently the result of the discussion of heated real-world issues such as politics, religion, and philosophy, or of issues that polarize subpopulations, but can also be provoked by seemingly trivial differences. Deliberate flaming, as opposed to flaming as a result of emotional discussions, is carried out by individuals known as flamers, who are specifically motivated to incite flaming. These users specialize in flaming and target specific aspects of a controversial conversation.”
Level: 25-50 (depending on severity and repeat offenses)
CRITTING IN PROMPTS & CHALLENGES FORUM
Defined: critiquing is not allowed in the P&C forum. P&C is intended as a place of writing practice and inspiration only. If a member wants their response to a prompt or challenge critiqued they will post it in the appropriate Feedback forum.
Level: 5
ONE-LINER CRITIQUES
Defined: critiques that literally amount to brief statements of non-helpful feedback such as “I liked it. Good job.” Or “You need to work on your punctuation.” Or “I don’t get it.” Or any comment that lacks substance or useful information that a writer can use to improve their craft. (A warning is a last-ditch effort to prove to the offender that LF is devoted to in-depth crits. Several verbal urgings will occur before a numeric warning is issued.)
Level: 5
PRIVATE MESSAGE MISUSE
Defined: using the private message system for sending uninvited spam, uninvited critique invitations, uninvited admiration that may be construed as stalking; predatory solicitations that may be defined as “fishing” for underage or gender-specific targets; harassing or trolling another member; flaming. (Actions judged as criminal after thorough investigations by moderators will result in immediate ban rather than a warning.)
Level: 25-50 (depending on nature of illicit PMs)
Other Actions Possible: PM Disable, Account Disable, ban
SIGNATURE/PROFILE/POSTING VIOLATION
Defined: posting images, quotes, or links to websites, images, or videos that may be construed as pornographic or insulting to any human being of whatever race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
Level: 25-50 (depending on severity of circumstances)
Other Actions Possible: Account Disable, ban
SOLICITING CRITIQUES
Defined: continually asking or begging for critiques anywhere, be it in the shoutbox, PMs, or forum posts. (If a member is giving critiques, they should also be receiving them. If a member is not receiving critiques for no good reason (thinking a member is obnoxious is not a good reason), then it’s time for the staff to step in and provide a solid crit rather than issue a warning.)
Level: 5
SPAMMING
Defined: advertising offsite products or services, recruiting LF members to other writing websites. This applies for all areas of the forum, including posts, PMs, shoutbox.
Level: 50 (Chances are high that it’s an automatic ban.)
Other Actions Possible: Account Disable, ban
TROLLING
Defined: “deliberately provoking others online by saying inflammatory and offensive things. Trolls live to make people upset and angry.” (Trolls, you know who you are.)
Level: 25-50 (If this crosses the line into Abusive Behavior or Flaming, it merits a 50-100. Persistent trolling will result in a ban.)
Other Actions Possible: Account Disable, ban
OTHER: TBD (We admit, we MAY not have seen it all. So we’re allowing for issues we can’t predict. Discussion among staff will determine warnings for anything not listed above.)
How It Works:
If a member receives a warning from a moderator, they will receive a Private Message explaining the infraction and the consequence. They will also see above their avatar an obnoxiously vivid box showing them the "Level" of severity of the warning, in terms of a percentage. This level will be anywhere between 5% and 100%, depending on the severity of the infraction that incurred the warning. Only staff and the warned member can see their warning level.
Severe infractions earn an immediate ban (100%). Other warnings might come with a single chance to make different choices (50%). Still others provide a lot of grace (5%) and time for improvement. All numeric warnings, except for the most flagrant violations of civilized behavior, will be proceeded by verbal encouragement, then a single verbal warning.
The date the warning was issued will be logged. Warned members may petition moderators via PM to remove the warning after two weeks. Staff will discuss the petition before rendering a decision.
We do not like handing out warnings. Please do not force this upon us.
