I swear I thought Iron light was Raveneye. Maybe you have the same writing style.
Congratulations!

So the first and last entries both had trains — and the alternative entry idea I started writing at one point also had a train! It was going to be about a guy who dies and boards a train to the afterlife while reflecting on the things he ran "out of time" to accomplish in life.
I'm seriously surprised that I placed. I thought people were misunderstanding my entry — the 'spiritual jailing' just bound the guy's mind and made him unable to feel much joy and such, and basically it was about how having to cultivate anger or contempt for him in order to keep the magical bonds fresh 'imprisoned' the narrator too. I thought I had messed it up.
Good contest.

Congrats to all of you! Can't wait to read these entries. And thanks, Alatariel, for running a great contest!
Sorry I had to withdraw, everyone. I tried to get the critiques done and posted in time for my road trip, but it just couldn't happen. Anyway, I'll enjoy reading the entries after the fact.

Woot! Congratulations everyone, y'all had some seriously killer hooks to read through! While writing my entry I actually started working on the what-comes-after, so maybe I'll have a very short story to post. Explain a few more things, answer some of the questions people had. If my brain decides to keep running with it, now that the fanfare is over. Thanks for hosting, Ala!

There are details of what I wrote that I could have done better. So after looking at what you all said about my fantasy attempt, I can definitely improve.
I'm a competitive person anyway.

I’ll see what revisions I can come up with, based on the excellent suggestions offered.
I have/had a story that started with a Pope’s dream, which as I worked on it was quickly becoming an ever growing octopus. That’s become a victim of story deconstruction. And a similar ending but different path is being walked.
Yes, Ilustri is a title, for Giovani Acuto-Sir Johnathan Hawkwood. Ilrapp and Dante are created characters, who will work to have their respective city states lead an offer to form a coalition among the various city-states, and no! The Invincible Overlord will not be one of them. ( an old D&D reference)
