Cancer is a black hole. Hospice care is just a nice name for something so full of pain and regret and the sour smell of death. My patients wait. They lay in their beds or sit in their chairs and wait. They can’t pull free of the event horizon but they can’t make the inevitable come faster. And so they wait in agony. Often it’s physical agony, but even more often it’s agony over decisions made or unmade. They’re stretched and broken into a million pieces as the endless darkness slowly and methodically consumes them. Cancer is a black hole.

A Night with a Page
You are a pernicious thing,
mocking us with emptiness.
Silence your confounding taunts,
we’ll fill your black hole
with hearts blood, as ink.
Thief of light,
Delayer of Sandman’s dreams.
You’re Pandora’s enemy.
Bedlam incarnate,
a proxy for despair.
In bed with our spouses
you’re twisting our dreams,
You act like a Selkie.
look like a Kitsune.
Always consuming, never sated.
When drained and tired,
when dawn’s light
Spew’s through blinds slats.
We smile at what’s been created,
and that always drives you away.
A new day arrives
Dawn’s light on coffee’s steam
you’ll return, I know
for another nights battle.
