Its a fun movie. Maybe if I knew more about French History and studied more than a few videos here and there and an old highschool history class, I would see the problem the French seem to have, but I didn't.
Riddley Scott has been hit or miss in his movies, and I like to think this it.
This film focus on the Famous French Emperors career from taking a British Occupied fort during the French Revolution, to a scattering of battles throughout his career, the final defeat at Waterloo, and even the end of his life in Exile after his ultimate defeat. Between these moments, and the few political moments, the film focuses on the tempestuous relationship with his love and wife Josephine. Throughout their time together, they had a love hate relationship where they couldn't stand to be apart but at other times hated each other.
I like Joaquin Phoenix's does a good job. He does laugh and show emotion despite what the trailers show, but it his stiffness seems like it was part of the role. Maybe I am reading this too deeply as an Autistic person myself, but it almost feels like he is playing someone on the spectrum. In his element, the theater of war, he is a mastermind and utterly brilliant. Trying to woo a woman, or play the role of a politician, he is completely out of his element, and it seems people are hoisting positions of power on him when he just wants to command troops (but feels fate and destiny is on his side so takes the role of Emperor and what not). In Private moments with Josephine he is allowed to relax.
Venessa Kirby also plays a show stealing role opposite of Phoenix's Bonapart. She was a strong and willful woman in real life, and needed an actress that could pull that off. Without needing to yell for the most part, she could show she had as much control as he did, and was no pushover.
Battle scenes are awesome. Not particularly gory, but they are very bloody. There is gore, with the worse being a horse being shot under Neplion by a cannon in the first battle in the movie. While CGI was used plentifully, there were till hundreds of extras and horses used, and sets and locations to bring this to life.
Its a wonderfully paced movie. I didn't feel it was a two and half hour film. Poorly passed an hour and a half long movie can feel like 8 hours, and despite this one's length I never felt board.
However if there was one area I think could have been improved, it was the sex scenes. The two or three they show seem to come out of nowhere, with little build up, with the first one coming out of nowhere it felt. While I think they do have a scene that shows the difference between making love and just having sex, with the latter largely shown after the fact or they fade to black, it could have been better. If they had the same buildup as they did the battles maybe I would feel different.
Otherwise, worth the money to go see.
What are your thoughts on it and anyone with any French History knowledge care to put in why France is having umbridge with it?
