Magnetic Pull
It was a long time in coming. Decades, we’d prepared, delved and hoarded. Still, the final flip took us by surprise. Probably because we hoped it would never come. We knew it was over when, on May 31, the sky broke open and dumped a three feet of snow. Birds, whose internal compasses spun out of control, plummeted, frozen. Butterflies too, what few were left. Budding fruit froze on the branch, and our mutant wheat withered in the fields.
It was time to go underground until the planet righted itself. Who would we be by then? What would we be?

LOL, and I see that one of my 100 words was a stray typo. Ugh. Oh, well. I guess I'll need to fix that for the Compendium.

Posting this one now because I was trying to write something for "Crown" and found the draft I wrote for this one! Oopsie.
"Don't Forget to Pack a Lunch"
It was May when the doctor said mother wouldn't make it to another Christmas. Emily and her sisters raided the thrift stores for holiday paper to wrap odds and ends from the dresser. The neighbors thought they were crazy, painting frost on the windows and dousing the front walk in crushed ice. Daddy picked up hot chocolate on the way home.
Now, every year, she spends a whole day chasing the horizon on the last thing she bought with her mother's inheritance. A small cabin boat; bright white, with a single dark green line painted down the side.

I really enjoyed this, Caulder! Good job!
I remember I had drafted something for "Snow In May" too, but all I remember thinking was, "Really? You're going with another dark one?" And I couldn't think of anything else.
