A.D. 1666
For long ages afterward, children would chant a rhyme about rings around rosies as they themselves danced in a ring. They would laugh as they fell to the ground, corpselike.
But for now, she lowered a long black veil before her ageless face and got to work. Harvesting countless souls in so short a time was exhausting. But that was the plague for you. Rows of shrouded bodies filled the gutters, blackened boils bursting at pulseless throats. Ashes, ashes, rose from cremation pits. Gravediggers paused to press bouquets to their noses, believing smell spread death.
And no one was laughing.

HERE COMES THE BRIDE
Eighteen times a bridesmaid, dressed in some hideous gown, Penelope had followed a friend down the aisle. Never had a sweetheart to call her own, the situation was getting old. So was Penelope.
Done with procrastination, she took fate into her own hands. No nineteenth walk of shame for Penelope.
She'd dispose of the body later. For now, Penelope was radiant beneath the heavy veil obscuring her features, carrying a posy of pretty pink roses. The groom would never realize the switcheroo until it was too late, the ring was on her finger and they were well and truly married.

Aw, nobody else voted? Bummer. These were awesome entries, if I do say so myself. BUT it's awesome to share the podium with you again, Foxxglove!

Same here, Raveneye, but much like you, I do wish this were a more popular forum. I'd love to see a whole selection of wonderful tales to choose from.

Oof, I try to vote in each poll but this one slipped my mind. Both were lovely entries! I'll try to be more diligent about that in the future.
