I took a video to explain where part of my story idea came from, heh. I'll post it after voting ends. Is comparing entries to each other even more difficult than putting numerical scores on each one? It seems hard to say what piece is downright 'better' than another. But I guess there were times in other contests that I thought one piece was fairly deserving yet I had to rate it low for something or another. I decided that I would base my comments as if I was doing a book review of the story for Amazon/GoodReads, but with a slightly more critical eye. I’ve always been a reader and though I respect the heck out of all editors, I doubt I would be a good one, hence mine are from a readers POV. I mean, that's what a critique is! In our "How to Critique" sticky it encourages giving your reactions to things as a reader. When I did writing workshops in university, that kind of thing was the large majority of the critiquing: "I found this part hard to believe," "I really liked this character." It's not all grammar and word choice stuff. And reactions are very helpful. It's good to know whether we're producing the effect we want.

Scintilla, you’re correct, but when I(we?) place a score on the separate elements of the story, that changes my reading from a reader to an editor, the emphasis becomes what’s wrong? Like when a company had it’s ISO audit. They auditors are trained to find things wrong over finding what’s right. That’s why I’m enjoying reading these entries so much. I can look for why I like an entry than why I don’t. To me the average reader doesn’t care about a few technical mistakes, they want a story to enjoy, take them away for a while. Yes, excessive errors will be noticed and affect their enjoyment. A reader to me is a story first, other things last kind of person.
Many here are editors and I get that. The “You never know who’s reading your story, so make it perfect.” Even writing a story for any contest gets my stomach churning. Why? I know my lack of the proper rules of writing and SPG, will clobber any score I’d receive. That’s why I love this contest, a chance to be a reader first and critic second. Doing it the other way isn’t wrong.

It is going to be hard deciding how to rate the stories. I'll be using the old way of voting for my own personal scoring to help with that. We'll see how it goes!

Eesh, I gotta get that last story critted and my votes put in order. One weekend to go! Me too. This is proving far more difficult than I thought it would be. Such a varied and intriguing crop of stories.

True, very true. I think I have my top story picked out because it incorporates the theme so well. It'll be hard to sort the others. But maybe I'm not supposed to discuss that part of the contest?

Waiting until my crits are finished before ranking the stories.

I still have a couple more to read. I already don't know how I'm going to rank the ones that I have read. It's so hard to decide which piece is better than another; they are good and bad in different ways.
Glad people seem to be liking the voting system!
