Ever had a character from a story that either didn't work out or you've lost interest in but find the character interesting enough that you want to bring that character into a different story that you've wrote? Maybe you felt the old story they were in didn't use them to their full capacity or simply find them more engaging than the story itself.

Maybe you felt the old story they were in didn't use them to their full capacity or simply find them more engaging than the story itself. OMG this happened to Brandon Sanderson!! His first published novel, Elantris, originally had a brother of the king character who took a lot of the focus away from the main plot. His editor told him to cut out the character completely and Brandon did so, with lots of anguish, and put the character away for a while. Then he gave the character his OWN novel (tweaked, of course, because he wasn't the bro of the king anymore but his own person with his own arc) which is Warbreaker and he is SOOO many people's all time favorite character. But personally, yes, I've had to do this with my big epic fantasy novel that I keep re-writing. I've cut a favorite character AND I'm thinking about cutting another. I think they are distracting from my main characters. They are a side character who doesn't even interact with my main characters until maybe....book 2 or 3 but I want their story included. However, it might not be needed and could just be ME wanting it. Hard to see clearly sometimes. I've also taken characters from stories that exist in my head and written short stories about them...but that's kinda different.

I need to give myself permission to do this with some of my characters.

I need to give myself permission to do this with some of my characters. With me I must ask for my characters consent before I transfer them to another story

With me I must ask for my characters consent before I transfer them to another story LOL, I think I'd be less polite and tell them, "Here! I'm gonna plunk you down in the middle of this horrible situation that's even worse than the first one."

At the moment there are a pair of siblings I am looking at doing this with. They are loosely based on Katherine and Sebastian from Cruel Intentions.

It happens. Sometimes they don't fit the current story, or you have too many and you have to cull the herd. I have had to do that a few times.

Maybe you felt the old story they were in didn't use them to their full capacity or simply find them more engaging than the story itself. Just discovered this thread. I have actually! And it's usually because the character themself made it very clear that I'd messed up and put them in the wrong story. So then I have to carefully cut them out of that one, and then sit down and do some random writing prompts with the character to figure out where they need to be. Then that of course gives me a ton of ideas, and I'm able to transplant them in the story for which they'd been pushing me towards anyway.
