THIS EVENT IS CLOSED Our first Fiction Drive, hosted in March of 2021, was a rousing success. While we wait for a new year of contests to kick off, let's not neglect our other writing projects or those stories gathering dust in our desk drawers.
WHAT IS A FICTION DRIVE?
It’s a brief push to encourage critiquing and showcase what LegendFire is all about. Post a story, critique a bit, get entered into a raffle drawing. The goal is to keep it casual, low-stress, energetic, informative, and fun.
GENERAL RULES
To participate, you must POST ONE STORY or EXCERPT (up to 3500 words) in the FICTION FORUM (the main Fiction forum, not the subforums) and CRITIQUE any TWO stories by other participants. (I will check word counts to ensure pieces remain under 3500)
All LF’s rules surrounding critiquing still apply. Keep it constructive and respectful.
SCHEDULE
Event opens Monday, January 3 Event closes Monday, January 17 All stories must be posted by January 12
Post stories any time between Monday, January 3 and Wednesday, January 12, 11:59 pm. Begin critiquing immediately or whenever is most convenient. Critiquing wraps up on January 17, 11:59 pm, whereupon Raveneye will draw your usernames from a hat. Literally.
ONE MORE TIME: Please have your story posted in the Fiction Forum by the end of January 12 to ensure others have time to critique it.
WHAT MAY YOU POST?
Any WIP you have been working on or that has been languishing in your desk drawer (up to 3500 words). This includes:
stories you may have written for LegendFire’s past contests opening pages of longer short stories or novellas opening novel chapters up to three flash fiction pieces (each 1000 words max, posted in the same post).
Be cautious about posting rough drafts. Polish before you post.
TEMPLATE
REQUIRED. To help us differentiate your story from non-participating stories, and so we know to include you in the raffle drawing, the title of your post needs to follow this pattern:
“FICTION DRIVE: Your-Title-Here”
RAFFLE PRIZE
You must complete two critiques by the end of January 17 to be entered. All participants’ names will go into Raveneye's steampunk top hat. The winner will receive an ebook copy of the Wonderbook: The Illustrated Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction, contributed by Raveneye.
HONOR POINTS
All participants will earn 100 Hard Points upon completing two critiques.
REGISTRATION
No need to register. Just post your entry in the Fiction Forum using the required title any time before January 12.

Show me that steampunk hat.
*hit with epiphany*
I just realized that my hunting story qualifies! Its been looked at twice before. That said, critiques I got elsewhere gave me more to edit... I just don't think some of what I got was accurate.

Hmm, the piece I want to post is a bit long, and I'm still working on the ending (no idea how it ought to end yet, have several ideas, and none I love), but I'm happy with the first 3500 words, really happy, so I'll prolly post it anyway...

The three main options are older stories, one of which I believe I posted on the old site. One of them fits under the word limit. The other two don't. None of which I've done a thing with in 3-4 years. That right there should make me not consider them. Technical scores of less than 2 aren’t high on my opinion of my writing, though they've been common my scores recently.
The other options are the first parts of my two finished book drafts. What good is having the first 3.5k of books I plan to publish this year, looked at help?

Yeah, my story will be too long to post all of it, but having feedback on the first half can help me improve the last half. So I'm posting it anyway. After the Drive I might post the last half as well.

Not sure what to post for the fiction drive. Maybe the intro chapter for my other main character, Darq. I posted my first chapter narrated by Raine. Maybe I do Darq to see if the opening for him is compelling.

For this, I'm finally getting around to revising "Like Paper Planes Unfolding" — thanks to everyone who gave feedback during the Rise from Ruin contest and ScienceGirl for her prize edit. Revising is hard for me. It's probably something I would give up on or would take really long to do if it weren't for this event. Actually, maybe that's weekly question material— One of them fits under the word limit. The other two don't. None of which I've done a thing with in 3-4 years. That right there should make me not consider them. Technical scores of less than 2 aren’t high on my opinion of my writing, though they've been common my scores recently. I don't think that's too bad, and as a critiquer I wouldn't mind. Plus technical problems are often easy to fix.

Scintilla, It isn't save that having the entire story would be the best option. Rough yesterday as I tried to narrow down my options and got embroiled in the rules of writing,POV and other issues that are way above my pay grade to noticebly affect. Slow it down,I have time. Narrowed it down so maybe tonight or tomorrow morning. I see that HD has made it to the starting line. Congrats. Oh, using the Read out loud function is nice.

I just realized that in the default skin/theme that likely most people are using, links aren't highlighted (or so marginally as to make no difference). I've adjusted the color of all links just a bit, so maybe they'll pop out from the regular text. To answer FoxxGlove 's question in the Shoutbox, post your story in the regular fiction forum. The link to the forum should show up better in the announcement above. If the contrast is still not enough, I can change the color to something more obnoxious. Also, in the Editor box, links are underlined, but they're not when posted, which is dumb. Even if I select to have links underlined, they refuse to be underlined. So I'll have to figure out if I can go into the code to fix that stupidity.

There! Got the links to be underlined in the announcement. Clicking the dumb underline button didn't work, had to apply the bb code manually. Dumb. Anyway, the links are at least very apparent now. Sheesh. I had no idea this had been a problem from the beginning. No wonder folks were asking questions that the links were meant to address. Dumb devs shoulda made the links obvious from the beginning. (This is what comes from Raveneye using a different theme from the default all these months.) Went through all our themes' code and changed all the link colors to brighten them up a bit. What good is a link if it looks just like the regular text???????

Ooooh liking the new look. LOL, thanks! The quest to fix the link color issue led to a rabbit hole of cosmetic changes. Oh well.

Do we critique the stories like a contest entry?
