I totaly forget the term or phrase but it's something like this.
Sometimes a volcano is just a volcano.
I take that to mean, not everythng in a story impacts the story. Do you read a stry with this in mind and or do you write your stories withthis in mind?

I think maybe (but this might be one of those Abraham Lincoln quotes the Internet moments) this goes back to a Freudian quote we studied in college.
A cigar is just a cigar…
Which if memory serves me has some kind of falsely written article about a deep connection to existence but is more an urban legend that some things are just what they are with no existential meaning.
So as far as story goes, I think it’s those times when people try to analyze the life out of a piece to find symbolism that’s not there, or maybe when an author tries too hard with it (think The Scarlet Letter)
I’ve heard it said to use patterns and symbols like salt—sparingly.

Yes but also when trying to figure things out. Some things don’t impact the story at all.
