Well, I managed to pull something out of thin air. The story probably sucks, don't care. It was fun just to write something.

I'm having fun with my fiction entry! Almost 1K so far. I'm thinking of trying to swap out poetry for nonfiction, but we'll see.

Fiction story draft is complete and I have words available and I've learned from experiance hereI need to use each and every one or be penalized for leaving words unused.
Poem to be made into a completed draft next.

I don't think you're penalized for not having reached the upper limit of words, Pel, assuming your story is complete with what you've already used. In other words, I'm pretty sure that less than 3,000 words is perfectly acceptable provided the tale has a beginning, middle and satisfactory end. I welcome correction on that assumption if I'm wrong.

It has happened that in some earlier contests the comment that I left ‘words off the page’ was made. In one contest, I was in the bottom half with others who did the same, while those that were in the top half were all rather close to the target. I apologize for insinuating that it was the lack of words itself that would be a problem vs. their absence as it affected how my story was then and could be here was written in clarity, purpose, and flow. One of the few rules I take to heart is; cut, cut some more and when done, find a bit more to cut. This from members more at the old site.

I just stayed up late to write about two-thirds of my story! This is my second short story since my first NaNo. I think that really helped me learn to write quicker. I'm so excited about this story. 3000 words probably won't be enough for the whole plot I had in mind, but a simpler chain of events works.
I do need to do some thinking about how the last scene plays out. This story has been an unusual challenge in that I knew the general things that should happen, but it's hard to come up with actual scenes to illustrate the stuff happening.

Story is progressing well added several hundred words in first edit .
Poem is also progressing but trying to fit it in might be an issue. I’ll look at shrinking it by emphasizing a section vs the whole.

Ugh, I've stalled. Hopefully I can get something done in time but I'm kind of brain-stuck.

Third attempt of a main story that fits the parameters. First one didn't fall under any parameters. The Second I realized might count as fan fic (based around an old half orc paladin character I did in D&D). Now something more origional.

I keep getting too little sleep because of writing and particularly my bad habit of starting too late in the day. But my fiction story is drafted and needs a good deal of revising and rewriting. I have lots of energy for this story, more than usual. I wonder if it's really any good.
When the contest opened, I thought I would finish nonfiction first because I had a pretty solid idea for that. As it turns out, reality doesn't always match up to what would complete a nonfiction piece well. I don't know where I'm going with this piece and am questioning if it's worth it.
And maybe I'll attempt a poem? I don't have an idea for one.

Story is cleaning up rather well. Doesn't look like I'll need to cut as I'm several hundred under the limit. Poem doing almost as well though I think it's the weaker of the two.
I do see the difference using more words can make in my story. It was never of being penalized for fewer words, but when you fully believe yourself to be the worst at editing, S.P.&G, POV issues, you tend to avoid such.Perhaps I've learned more on my writing journey, and if so, I thank all here for their patience and help with that. As a dear friend who's no longer here had told me, "Pel, always put your best writing out there, you never know who is reading it. You'll never be as good as you want nor are you ever as bad as you think."
