"A box is left anonymously on your doorstep. You find something troubling inside. What is it?"
Given the "You" reference, does this mean the story should be written in the first person?

Hi, Please sign me up. I look forward to giving this another try.
Just to clarify:
The prompt is "situational" or "Out of the Box"?
Thanks

Given the "You" reference, does this mean the story should be written in the first person? Point of view doesn't matter, I suppose. Anything that fits your vision of the prompt. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, all acceptable.

Got you on the list, Soliton!

I still don't have a good idea on mine. And since last year I came up with a much cooler idea for the hook contest when we were in the voting phase, I'm afraid to go with a mediocre idea again. Just to clarify: The prompt is "situational" or " Out of the Box"? I'm pretty sure that 'situational' describes the prompt? As in everyone has to write about the same situation, finding a box of something troubling on the doorstep.

I'm in full panic mode over trying to move out of state, but yea let's add this to my plate. Don't know if I'll follow through but let's try. Oh golly, that's a lot. No pressure at all. Leaving Idaho? Where you headed? We're moving to Austin...I have a whole host of feelings about it. But it's happening.

Well, 8 hrs close. Austin is a fun place. Seeing the Formula 1 race downtown there is on my bucket list. And the bats! I love renting a kayak and watching the bats emerge at dusk from under the bat bridge. Amazing nature right in the middle of an urban center.

Ah, go on then! I'll give it a shot. Yay, Farida! Great to see you! Got the newsletter that said your second book was released as a paperback. Set in New Mexico, right? I'm so buying it if/when I can order it here in the US of A. Edit: Looks like I can! It'll go on the shelf right beside Ruby. (Is it weird I think of your first book as Ruby?)

Ugh, when my cats woke me up at 5 am this morning, I laid awake for an hour brainstorming my entry. It sounded so great at that hour. Now, trying to remember it and write it down, it seems so dumb.
Why does that happen? Anyone else have this problem?
Any great ideas popping up yet?
Edit: Also, happily, I seem to have figured out the polling site. So no math this contest! Yay.

Some years ago, I had a dream that a box of something was left on my doorstep. While that wouldn't really work as a story, I came up with two other things that could be left on one's doorstep that would be troubling for a similar reason. I thought about it on a walk, and one idea is a lot more solid than the other.
If anyone's having trouble getting an idea, I can recommend brainstorming reasons that box contents could be troubling and go from there.
It's so tough writing beginnings, knowing what order to release information in—

I came up with an idea a day or two ago - have a little less than 100 words so far! I think I can make it work. Edit: I may be getting overzealous this week?! I'm working on this entry, working on a new D&D character, and may be doing a flash fiction competition - all this weekend. Send help. Lol.

The idea for this challenge, together with the "putting it all together" part, came far too easily and far too quickly. I have to be missing something along the way. It must simply be an incredible piece of rubbish. Good things just aren't this easy.

I'm trying to think of an idea that would be a good way to start a much longer story. I want to practice some advice I've seen lately from publishers about a good beginning to a story, like making the setting/situation easy to grasp quickly and the character voice strong enough to pull you into the story.
However, thinking of such a situation for a box in challenging. Not in a bad way, just in a way that makes me stretch my mind.
