LegendFire’s REBOOT contest has successfully concluded!
What a joy it was to host a contest again. Each of you contestants put in the work and did a fantastic job—both writing and critiquing.
I am happy to announce our top 3 winners. Tallied twice, the scores were extremely close, coming down to hundredths of a point.
1st Place: “Shaking the Jinx” by Caulder Melhaire
2nd Place: “Radioactive” by Alatariel
3rd Place: “Like Paper Planes Unfolding” by ScintillaMyntan (As contest host, I deferred from accepting a place on the pedestal, just in case anyone does their own tally.)
Remember to claim your Honor Points! 1st Place takes 200 Hard HP (for a total of 300) 2nd and 3rd take 100 Hard HP (for a total of 200) All contestants take 100 Hard HP for entering (for a total of 100).Here are your winner badges: Sincerely, thanks to each of you who entered, critiqued, and voted. The contest was a success because of each of you.
A special shoutout to havekrillwhaletravel & Tisi – you both critiqued each entry despite not having entries of your own. It's my pleasure to award you both 100 Hard HP because you went above and beyond.

Well that's unexpected (mine)! I completely thought I'd been knocked out of the running. Wow. Thanks for the votes!
I thought all the entries were absolutely fantastic. Seriously, everyone did really well and I'd love to see some of these stories expanded into longer works! So much potential.

Congratulations to the winners!
Everybody had rather unique interpretations of the theme, which resulted in interesting stories! All of them were enjoyable to read.
This was my first contest and I hope to participate in more in the future! I hope my critique skills improve as well.

.... Honestly did not see that coming, wow. Hey, congratulations to our lovely podium, and really just awesome work everyone. There were so many amazing entries to go through! I had an absolute blast reading them all. And thank you all for your lengthy and insightful critiques! I appreciate folks taking the time to dig in and be so specific about what works and doesn't (even if sometimes y'all give my poor heart whiplash LOL).

You know, it creeps me out a little that I had a dream last night that I checked LegendFire and got third place. Like, on a story about a fake psychic—
Congratulations to all, and thank you! I had fun with this contest.

Okay, I'm freaking out now. Weighed suggestions, made some edits, and cannonballed that story out the door. BOOM! May it land softly and find favor with the submissions gods. Now the sucky waiting part. The antho I submitted it to won't start reading subs until March 1, and my story is 90th in the queue. Ugh. This one doesn't want simultaneous subs, which is always troublesome, cuz life is too short. It's preferable to get several rejections out of the way all at once, instead of waiting around on one at a time. Guess I'll go write something else while I wait... Looking for markets to sub to is inspiring at least. Do y'all find it inspiring or intimidating?

Ooh, good luck Raven!
Looking? Inspiring. Actually submitting? Personally I'm flipping terrified LOL. I haven't submitted anything to anywhere since... 2011?! Sometime around then. Got rejected (six months later, bastards) and really just haven't had anything worth submitting since. So I'm totally excited to be submitting this piece to places, but man, shopping around, and drafting cover letters, and hoping with bated fingers and crossed breath is gonna be a riiiiiiiiide for me.

So I'm totally excited to be submitting this piece to places, but man, shopping around, and drafting cover letters, and hoping with bated fingers and crossed breath is gonna be a riiiiiiiiide for me. It IS scary. And exciting. And SCARY! "There is no courage without fear." Who the hell said that? Anyway... If you expect rejection letters, it can take the sting out. Using a place like Submission Grinder that keeps track of acceptance/rejection rates helps. That way you can see if a zine has a 99% rejection rate (like the pros do), then you can be sure you're in good company when the rejection arrives in your inbox. Plus, it's good practice to have a whole list of places to submit to, all ready to go. So when the rejection arrives, you immediately have the next place to send it. The process starts to feel like a business, rather than personal. Have a standardized cover letter with a brief author bio that you can tweak (usually in very minor ways), so that when you have to send it out yet again, it's less annoying to do so. It's very rare that I have to write up something unique for a cover letter. Some places ask you to write a short "blurb" for the story, just in case they accept it, but that's really rare. Anyway, not sure if that helps, but maybe somebody needs the tips?

Omigosh, are you serious?! That's kind of amazing. Yep. I guess it was on my mind when trying to sleep. Looking for markets to sub to is inspiring at least. Do y'all find it inspiring or intimidating? It's pretty discouraging seeing how low the acceptance percentages are for most markets. And a whole lot of literary magazines, particularly non-speculative fiction ones, just look so stuffy and unappealing in the first place. I found a few I could submit to when I've fixed up the piece, though. —Also, c-can Caulder explain his story? I liked it but spent so long trying to puzzle it out.
